I Love having a Workout Buddy!

I am a major fan of my workout buddy, Steve Bloomberg! He is a fitness guru who has mastered the art of exercise so that you keep coming back for more.
I am still getting back on the P90X…but I need to get in better shape first and Steve is fabulous! The biggest barrier with keeping up a great exercise routine is not just finding the time, but managing your progress so that you can actually get out of bed the next morning without requiring heavy equipment (you know, the kind that beeps when backing up)…You know how it goes – you start your workout thinking “I’m going to start off easy”, your timer dings, or you get through the warm-up & think “you know, I feel pretty good, I think I’ll just see how much I can do” or “You know, I DID eat that piece of cheesecake last night …” Pretty soon you’re standing there, sweating like a pig on legs that feel like Jell-o Jigglers on the San Andreas Fault & you just know . . . this one’s gonna hurt. So you take a few days off . . . and those few days lead to a few more – and we all know that drill!
A trainer applies the right amount of “pressure” to make sure that you get into the routine at the level that is best for you! This means that there are no more days of sitting at the office with your arms in slings because you tore your triceps pushing through those 100 reps of 10 you promised yourself on your second day working out (no, I haven’t done this one personally, but I have a sister . . . .What can I say? It’s genetic.). Even if you can’t afford a trainer, go to a gym and sign up for a free consultation. The small amount you will pay, if you do get a plan, just might be the jump start you needed to get it going (once and for all) . . . Or, you can just keep Jiggling away! :)

Day 76: Using your kids to motivate you!

One of the greatest motivational tools ever invented is a progress chart.

My three-year-old will do almost anything for the opportunity to add a sticker to her sticker chart. It really works wonders!

The Hidden Reason of Pain

Finding “your body type” may help you find an end to chronic pain. There are four body types: Adrenal, Thyroid, Liver and Ovary. Each type responds differently to diet, exercise and environment; and each has its own characteristics and needs. Pain is not picky, it affects any age, sex, race and body, and has a way of reducing life like nothing else; especially when one wakes up with pain on a regular basis.
The Science of body types has been studied for over 2000 years, built upon the philosophy that there are 4 basic types of imbalances a body is (genetically) “predispositioned” to have. According to the studies of Dr. Eric Berg, a pain relief and weight loss specialist for over 25 years; there are four basic types of chronic pain that coincide with other conditions stemming from poor organ and hormone health (4 Body Types). Finding out which body type you have unlocks the hidden causes of pain and other unwanted characteristics, and gives you the information you need to not only reduce or eliminate pain; but reestablish your overall health. Dr. Berg has developed a comprehensive body type program, “Most patients experience pain relief within the first couple days of the program. Next, they’ll experience an increase in energy and stamina, and in about four weeks, after the detox phase is complete, they should level out at about 2 pounds of fat loss per week until their ideal health stage is achieved.” He has now released a do-it-yourself body type total health kit, so that anyone can experience these results. The first step is finding your body type.

How I beat the rumors…a journey from fatness to fitness

adrenal body type stagesBeing cushioned with the popular myth that “a little extra fat is fine,” I packed on a full 30 pounds when I had my second child. My name is Monica Cardone and I am The Adrenal Body Type…and, I lost 31 pounds in three months using the Adrenal Maximizer kit.
I have pretty much been on a diet for 365 days out of the year, either struggling to just maintain my “ideal weight” or bouncing between 5 to 10 pounds (the typical yo-yo dieter). If you were to ask me six months ago, “Which diet has worked the best for you?”, I would have quipped, “just exercise more and eat less.” This was something I told a lot of people, but the actual truth was that I did not REALLY know the answer! Case in point: if I would have found the “magic diet” – something that not only worked, but consistently worked (you know, like for the rest of my life) – I wouldn’t have been willing to try yet another diet program (this time, the “body type diet”).
I have been familiar with the science of body types and weight loss for about ten years now, but never saw this as a potential solution for me because I didn’t consider that I was really that “overweight”. Plus, the science of body types is all about long-term programs and results, and to me that translated into “long term commitments.” The fact is, like most people, when I want to lose weight, I want to lose it now! Even if this means that I pay for it later.
Stepping on the scale after another crash diet episode, expecting to have lost at least ten of the 30+ pounds I packed on – and seeing that I had actually gained three pounds was my turning point. I decided to take the test and find my body type, because I realized my body was definitely “confused” – there was an imbalance, just as Dr. Berg has written about in his research as to why a person cannot lose weight despite exercise and eating less.
My results showed I was the Adrenal Body Type. This made perfect sense since I was seriously craving chocolate covered pretzels and living off of energy drinks for the past month. In fact, even more amazing was the fact that nearly ALL of the other characteristics described me to a tee (hopefully my husband never reads this :) .
I bought the Adrenal Maximizer kit for $149.95, which I found you can now try for free (you pay for the shipping and handling) for 14 days by going here ________. It is a two phase program designed for your body type: phase one is detox where you take your custom body type supplement with Dr. Berg’s detox formula and follow your body type’s custom eating plan; and phase two is the enhancement phase (fat burning) where you take the enhancement supplement with your body type formula and follow the fat burning eating and exercise plan. The program is designed to first, correct your body’s hormone imbalances, and then reestablish your health and ignite your body’s natural fat burning (think about it – if you crave unhealthy foods – something must be going on that is not correct, because nobody needs this type of “nutrition”, right? – in other words, let’s face it, your body is confused!). The kit comes with the book and weight loss tracking software, so it’s pretty much a do-it-yourself-doctor-formulated-weight loss all in a box.
I was expecting to lose weight slowly, which wasn’t ideal – but given that for the last three weeks I had been eating less and exercising and hadn’t lost an ounce…losing any weight at this point would be encouraging. The first three days were easy, but days 4 through 7 were absolutely miserable! I almost quit the program completely on the seventh day; I was exhausted, starving, cranky, and overall, not a happy camper. But getting dressed that morning changed everything…my pants were noticeably looser. I stepped on the scale and to my surprise I had lost a whopping eight pounds (in ONE WEEK)! That really got me motivated. I wrote down everything I ate (definitely recommended), and continued losing the weight until it leveled at about 2 lbs per week, just as Dr. Berg has said in his book.
Today I have more energy than I have had in years. I am not the perfect ten, but I am now committed to maintaining not just my weight but my overall health. The most interesting thing is that I realized my weight loss was really at the bottom of my true health concerns. Once I began the program, it became apparent how much my energy levels had decreased through the years. My skin tone improved and I feel like I look younger as well. Noticing these benefits has been a great motivation to take what I learned about my body type and keep the results. I am probably going to stay on phase two of the program forever! It costs about $49.95 per month, but from the research I have done, this is the best multi-vitamin you can take long term for your overall health; and the ONLY one made just for your body type.
Anyway, that’s my story. I hope this story motivates other women like me to try something long-term for a “short term weight loss goal”…you get so much more than weight loss – and who knows, you may be like me and lose weight a zillion times faster than Dr. Berg says!!

Day 60: Diet and Exercise Downloads

I wanted to post some handy downloads I found for tracking progress – one for diet and one for exercise (make that, EXTREME exercise). I received an email the other day asking me if I knew how to find out how many calories you should eat, cut, burn, etc. There are easy formulas you can use to do the math, but I found this cool spreadsheet that makes it simple. In other words, you just fill in the blanks in excel! Lovely. You can calculate your maintenance, fat loss, and/or muscle gain calorie intake and macronutrient ratios (fancy words for nutrition values) with Fat Loss Calculator v. 4 Excel spreadsheet.

Now onto the exercise part: these are great and they’re also FREE! This link is to download the P90X Worksheets in excel format. There are three versions of this workout – anyway this download is the best I have been able to find online. So, for those who failed to make copies of their workout sheets and are also doing P90X, here they are: http://www.paulymath.com/2009/02/26/p90x-log-sheet/

Enjoy!

Day 57: P90X to the extreme

I am trying the P90X out, because it happens to be one of the only ones I have yet to try (first, because it came out when I was about 6 months pregnant, and second, because I was afraid of it!). I was surprised to see that is begins with good old fashioned push-ups! Yay! :)

I started this morning and as expected, the first workout is a killer (in a good, burn-the-fat-so-fast-I-can-feel-it-sizzle way though). I definitely wouldn’t have survived the first ten minutes even 90 days ago. This is a “phase two program” (phase one for me was just getting my body back to burning fat and being more healthy – diet and low impact exercise). The great thing about exercise though, is that you work hard and then you want to protect your investment – so eating healthy comes a lot easier.

Day 18: Bust!

Bust!

I got on the scale late last night and it seems I am not even losing weight, but actually gaining it back ALREADY…

I know enough about diet and exercise to know that I am probably burning fat and replacing it with muscle (because after all I AM working out!) – but I swear my pants are still just as tight and there is no difference!  In fact, to tell you the truth, I feel fatter.  Today I totally gave in…I ate ice cream tonight and had 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (yes, that was not a typo…TWO!).  I feel like a failure on this and I am so mad at myself!  My perfect record is now ruined.  I even feel like cancelling my work out tomorrow morning but I can’t think of a good enough excuse.  I thought about just getting on our dusty treadmill in the basement and running my brains out…ugh!  That thought lasted about 30 seconds before I realized me running is not a pretty picture right now.  I feel like crap…time to just go bed.
